For many people, gaming is a fun and exciting pastime – a way to relax, challenge yourself, and feel the thrill of competition. But for some, gaming can start to take over. What began as entertainment can turn into a habit that feels hard to control. That’s where self-exclusion can help – it’s like pressing a pause button that gives you space to regain balance.

What is self-exclusion?

Self-exclusion means choosing to take a break from gambling or gaming for a set period of time. In Ireland, you can self-exclude from both online and in-person gambling venues. For example, you can register for self-exclusion with licensed online betting sites or ask to be excluded from casinos, betting shops, or gaming arcades.

The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) is introducing a National Self-Exclusion Register, which will allow you to block access to all licensed gambling operators in one step. Once you’re registered, you won’t be able to log in or create new accounts with those operators during your chosen exclusion period. It’s a practical way to create distance and take control if you find it difficult to stop on your own.

A pause, not a defeat

Using self-exclusion isn’t about giving up – it’s about taking responsibility. It can be hard to recognise when gaming or gambling has started to take up too much space in your life. Maybe you’re spending more time or money than you planned, or maybe thoughts about gaming are starting to dominate your day.

By activating self-exclusion, you’re giving yourself a breather. It’s a way of saying: “I need a break to get perspective.” Just like taking time off work when you’re stressed, this pause can help you reset and find your balance again.

How it works in practice

Self-exclusion can be tailored to your needs. You can choose how long you want to be excluded – from 24 hours to several months, or even permanently. Many people start with a shorter period to see how it feels to step away.

Once you’ve registered, the exclusion takes effect immediately. You can’t reverse it during the chosen period, and that’s the point – it creates a safe space where you’re not tempted to return too soon.

If you play online, you can also strengthen your break by using website blockers or adjusting your social media settings to reduce exposure to gambling ads. These small steps can make your pause more effective.

What can you use the break for?

Self-exclusion gives you time and clarity to reflect. Use the pause to think about what gaming means to you and how you want it to fit into your life in the future. For some, it’s about rediscovering gaming in a healthier way; for others, it’s about moving on completely.

You can also use the time to focus on other activities that bring you energy and fulfilment:

  • Get active – exercise or spend time outdoors to reduce stress and boost your mood.
  • Connect with others – time with family and friends strengthens your sense of belonging.
  • Try new hobbies – cooking, music, volunteering, or learning something new can bring fresh joy.
  • Talk to someone – a counsellor, therapist, or support service can help you understand your gaming habits and find strategies that work for you.

If you need support, you can contact Gambling Care, Problem Gambling Ireland, or Samaritans for free and confidential help.

When a pause becomes a new beginning

Many people who have used self-exclusion describe it as a turning point. The pause gives them a chance to regain control, rebuild their finances, and restore trust – both in themselves and in their relationships.

When your exclusion period ends, you can decide what comes next. If you choose to return to gaming, you can do so with new boundaries – setting spending or time limits and recognising when it’s time to stop. And if you decide that gaming no longer fits into your life, that’s a powerful choice too.

Take the first step

Self-exclusion is a tool designed to help, not to judge. It’s a way to look after yourself and your wellbeing. If gaming or gambling is starting to feel overwhelming, consider pressing the pause button. It might be the first step towards a calmer, more balanced life.
